THE REVIEW

Isolate yourself from the rest of the world, put on your headphones, and hold a great album like Love Over Gold by Dire Straits in your hands.
Before listening to the music, look at the cover, which depicts a lightning bolt in the night, almost as if to cut ties with songs like "Tunnel Of Love" and "Romeo And Juliet".

Now insert the CD and listen to it very carefully.
The album opens with a piece like "Telegraph Road", lasting 14 minutes and 15 seconds, and right from the first notes, you can notice the significant change this group wanted to make: a song that can be divided into multiple parts, as if they were the best Pink Floyd, it's a sweet melody that changes tempo several times until it culminates in the final four minutes in the guitar solo by the great Mark Knopfler.
The second track, "Private Investigations", is a piece where the leader "speaks" in a disconsolate tone, on a carpet of acoustic guitars and keyboards, with the subsequent addition of a dark bass that plays a chord for a good part of the song... basically... an easy song for bassists.
The third track, "Industrial Disease", already seems like the anticipation of what the Dire Straits will be a few years later, since it seems like "Walk Of Life part 1", a cheerful song whose melody revolves around the keyboard, a real innovation for the group in this album, since it's the first album in which a keyboardist joined the band.
The "title track" is the slow piece branded "Dire Straits", but with a very different sound from the more famous "Romeo And Juliet".
"It Never Rains" is a piece that clashes with the rest of the album, resulting as the worst among these 5 songs. Repetitive and, at times, tedious.

Once the listening is over, the listener discovers that Dire Straits are capable not only of being romantic and cheerful but also very dark, capable of writing melodies like Pink Floyd.
Certainly the most underrated album by the group, not having a famous piece, but definitely the most complete. A 5-star album.

"In 'Telegraph Road,' guitars and keyboards magically merge into a unified whole in the lavish finale."

"The title track is a real gem, with an acoustic guitar dominating and one of the most intense vocal performances."

"Telegraph Road, ladies and gentlemen, is Knopfler’s Colosseum, it is Dire Straits’ Piazza Duomo, the Eiffel Tower of Love Over Gold."

"It’s a caress on the head, it’s the image of a woman seen crying through the window... you can’t help but love someone."

Mark Knopfler is one of the best English rock instrumentalists, easily surpassing the likes of Harrison, May, Richards, etc.

Telegraph Road describes a struggle against unemployment and society’s selfishness with remarkable solos and rich keyboard phrases.
