This CD is truly a masterpiece of black metal, as evidenced by the fact that neither Dimmu nor other black metal bands have ever produced albums like this again. Let's remember that this CD was released back in the distant (for today's black metal) 1995.
Classical music (which some claim no longer exists as it has fused into metal - especially black or power) must have had a strong influence, particularly on Stian, perhaps the best keyboardist Dimmu has ever had (and Stormblåst is an album where the piano, along with the bass, is the main instrument). His piano riffs, as well as the strings in Guds Fortapelse, add a sweetness but at the same time a depressive energy typical of gothic metal, which is really significant in the songs.
The Norse language vocals, the group's native language, provide a remarkable addition to this CD, which if sung in English would probably have lost much of the contrast between the sweetness of the songs and the terrifying hardness of Shagrath's screaming (who, incidentally, plays the fool by toying with voice effects at the beginning of Dødsferd).
Within the songs, there are alternating moments between real gallops as in Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen and calmer, slower moments with an almost doom-like rhythm as in Broderskapets Ring, more cheerful, almost whistling melodies as in Antikrist, or very sad ones like at the end of Stormblåst.
A truly melancholic brick is the instrumental Sorgens Kammer (which SHOULD mean "chamber of sorrow"). Six minutes of just piano. If you manage not to commit suicide, it's a miracle.
In trying to fix one of the old works, they ended up making a truly respectable Black Metal album SWEET!
I believe the Dimmu have forgotten the sense of malice that was in the good old albums of the past!
It reaches an acceptable level, as lacking as it may be.
It’s still well-crafted, with at least a good foundation and good chapters that are not worth neglecting or even outright rejecting so categorically.
