MAD BUTCHER!!!
In this fantastic 2005, there have been some more than good music releases (Exodus, Obituary, Children Of Bodom, etc).
The album in question now is the latest effort from the legendary Destruction, a historic band that in the past contributed to the development of the German thrash scene along with two other iconic formations known as Sodom and Kreator, respectively led by "Onkel" Tom Angelripper and Mille Petrozza.
The new Destruction from the 2000 reunion went through three excellent works before reaching this "Inventor Of Evil" album, which I find well-played, very inspired and notably featuring a respectable production, even if the Germans moved from the colossal Nuclear Blast to the smaller producer AFM (the record label that recorded the last studio album of Annihilator, just to give you an idea).
I put the disc in the stereo and the tradition of Destruction's fucking old school thrash metal doesn't disappoint expectations!!!
It starts with a song that on November 28th at the Milan concert of the Teutonic band will claim many victims; indeed, "Soul Collector" is really fast and truly powerful (even during the chorus, blast-beats in death style appear)!!!
The voice of Schmier (bass/vocals) is caustic and vicious like few others, Mike (guitars) churns out riff after riff without missing a beat at a panic-inducing speed, but the greatest applause goes to Marc Reign, who behind the drums demonstrates an excellent technique and a precise execution full of tempo changes throughout the entire piece.
The second song, "The Defiance Will Remain," is another bomb symbolizing devastation, less fast than the opening track but with a truly powerful refrain; after the classic double beginning aimed at sound dismantling, we have the heavier and more thoughtful "The Alliance Of HellHounds," a real gem given the remarkable guest singers who have contributed to the crafting of the song. Indeed, among its ranks appear none other than Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir), Paul Di Anno (first two Iron Maiden albums), Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), Peter Tagtgren (Hypocrisy), Biff Byford, Messiah Marcolin, Peavy Wagner, Doro, Bjorn "Speed" Strid and naturally Schmier!
The journey continues through the good "No Mans Land" until reaching the strangest and most melodic song written by Destruction, just the title gives you an idea "The Calm Before The Storm"; the song in question begins with a very bittersweet guitar arpeggio then intensifies on the refrain and the chorus.
To recover ourselves, our guys give us the chance to do some healthy headbanging with the bone-breaking mid-tempos of "The Chosen One," then continue with "Pealer Of Hostility" and "Under Surveillance."
Instead, with "Seeds Of Hate," we return to sonorities further removed from the Teutonic thrashers; indeed, we have another creation a bit more melodic but which doesn't particularly excite me.
Now it's time for the fast and punk-like "Twist Of Hate," which precedes the final conclusive shard of the disc full of thrash power and ferocity that belongs to Schmier and company; excellent track.
Finally, we have a melancholic guitar arpeggio "Memories Of Nothingness" that serves as an outro.
It should be noted that in the limited edition, there is a well-played cover of Motorhead's "We Are The Road Crew" and the version of "The Alliance Of Hellhounds" sung only by Schmier.
In conclusion, we can say that it is an excellent album that gives us further confirmation that the Destruction reunion is not a commercial phenomenon, but instead there is a strong desire to play in the old-fashioned way, smashing skulls like the crazy butcher once did!!!
Recommended for thrashers and non-thrashers alike...THRASH TILL DEATH!!!
