The story tells of a young marchioness with red hair, Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles, the unwanted daughter of a lazy and bored marquis and a smuggler. She grows up with the servants, learning the African dialects of the slaves and their rituals. The deep hatred her mother directs at her from a young age and her father's complete indifference cause the girl to become increasingly isolated from the civilized world as she grows up, finding solace only in solitude and honing her ability to lie to everyone about everything.
