When he was around, trains didn't arrive on time. When he was around, Windows sucked. When he was no longer around, Windows still sucked. When he was around, you didn't get your pension. When he was around, they deported you on schedule. When he was around, the floors sparkled. When he was around, there was life on Mars. When he was around, we weren't there, and if we had been, we would have been shot down. more

Nearly 10 years since the first listen, it’s still one of my favorite records, a remarkable debut, a perfect work that for me remains the quintessential Hard-Blues album, despite the sublime forays into the electro-acoustic realm (more acoustic than electric) of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" or even the acoustic guitar instrumental by Page that ventures into pure traditional British (actually Irish) folk with "Black Mountain Side," which reprises "Down by Blackwaterside," particularly the version given three years prior by Bert Jansch, a tribute from Page to a great master. And "Dazed and Confused," acidic, psychedelic, and luciferian, is "My" Led Zeppelin song, extraordinary. And everything else... Wow, everything else... A masterpiece. more
Definitely more mature compared to the unripe debut, Defeis finds a vocal dimension that is much more suited to his style, and Jack Starr's hard rock outbursts become closer to the Epic genre. The result is touching pieces like "A Cry in The Night," the faster "Life Of Crime" and "Burn The Sun," and the grand Titletrack. 3.5 rounded up to 4 solely for that wonder of a song called "The Redeemer." more
