They invented rock & roll, new wave, psychedelia, progressive, and post rock. They also invented blues, jazz, classical music, the telephone, the wheel, and discovered fire. They had the same type of fans as boy bands, and for the last 30 years, they've only been talked about for gossip. Historically important, but I don't think more than many other bands from the same era.
