The Funeral Obsession

It is the debut of the Albion band, following two promising demos.

They formed in the early nineties, closely following the musical path of Cathedral, Bolt Thrower, and My Dying Bride.

But they will have a short, very short life. One full-length album, "Hope Finally Died", followed by their immediate end.

A promise of European Death-Doom that vanished into nothingness. A deathly nothingness, as dark as the music you can hear in the two tracks of the The Funeral Obsession EP.

Obsessive heaviness, repugnant typically Doomy and an unrestrained, choking Death Metal style aggression.

Very young, led by a solid six-string. A growling voice, with a saturated, sick, profound growl.

The rhythm section is lugubrious, creating a catacombal magma.

Only two tracks; over six minutes of "At the Rest" where the never-still guitar of James Ogawa dominates. Carefully thought-out riffs, at times with a decadent and romantic flavor. More convoluted passages in slow motion, inevitably reminding me of the already mentioned Cathedral in their primal phase, the one more Doom and exasperatingly slow.

The subsequent "Spawn of Maternal Cadaver" brutally shifts towards Death Metal territories; insane speed of execution, reckless, close to mortal derailment. Uncontrolled frenzy that suddenly quietens, stops. A short-lived calm, to recover, breathe deeply, and start again at full tilt, sowing blind auditory terror.

Grotesque and repulsive back cover but one that well accompanies the (de)composed music: the wax faces of the four band members disintegrating, decaying, melting. A brilliant and revolting idea.
