Ladies and Gentlemen, speaking ill of Death is impossible, and the most natural thing is that these guys have churned out masterpieces, inventions, geniuses, etc., one after another.
The pinnacle is indeed this 'Sound of Perseverance,' and also the last one before Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) passed away. Some say it is his spiritual testament, all these tracks were written for his side project Control Denied, an heavy metal project, while Death was disbanding, but the compositions were more suited for Death.
A truly homogeneous sound, the songs seem to be tightly linked to each other; it also seems to analyze the philosophy of the German poet Frederick Nietzsche, as fatalistic as few are, and analyzed with extreme execution. The songs are new, from "Scavenger of Human Sorrow" the group’s intentions are clear: technique, virtuosity, melody, etc., without neglecting moments of reflection. "Bite the Pain" is more intriguing; it traverses the life of Frederick Nietzsche with excellent music as always. "Spirit Crusher" is surprising right from the start with a breathtaking riff, the gentle "Story to Tell" which is more linear from a musical point of view and describes the world’s tragic end. "Flesh and the Power It Holds" describes, instead, the power the body has to imprison oneself and is the longest and most complicated track on the album. "Voice of the Soul" is the only Death track with an acoustic guitar where Chuck recorded everything alone. "To Forgive My Suffer" is, in my opinion, very interesting, leading to a final volume explosion. "A Moment of Clarity" describes the blind darkness of man clinging to his dreams and hopes.
"Painkiller" instead is the clear demonstration that the works contained in "Sound of Perseverance" with Chuck's voice are between death screaming and a heavy metal voice. The Judas Priest cover (Painkiller 1990) is very beautiful and is the catchiest song on the album. And so, this masterpiece is concluded, and thus the career of Death, a group led by their leader, halts and has written among the most beautiful and intriguing pages in death metal. We hope Chuck continues to play his guitar from paradise.
In this world, the best always leave, while jerks like Fred Durst do not. Thank you very much Chuck Schuldiner, praise to Death.
A huge death metal masterpiece.
The hope of everyone is that from 'up there' the great Chuck continues to play his guitar and continues to sing death metal, as only he knew how.
"UNIQUE in its genre!"
"Absolutely indispensable, every metalhead who loves to call themselves such must have this album."
Death... the name speaks for itself, doesn’t it?
This album is full of masterpieces... complete reverence for the best metal band that has ever existed.
Chuck could not have left a better tangible work of his great contribution to past, present, and future metal.
'Voice Of The Soul' is an instrumental gem... no one, not even the most extreme dance music listeners, will find ugly or unlistenable.
Have you ever experienced that feeling when you’re faced with something… whose grandeur takes your breath away because you realize that some people can truly be defined as giants?
Each single track manages to exude emotions from every note and especially from a voice, that of Chuck, which will remain… in the history of world heavy metal.
