LA RECENSIONE

Elena Tonra is keen to clarify that her solo album is by no means a sign of her wanting to leave Daughter. The band is already working on their third studio album.

Reading about Elena online (she has been praised to the point that I find it almost pointless to mention the numerous online magazines that have interviewed her) it’s clear the intent the Anglo-Italian musician had at the genesis of writing the album's lyrics. As she herself admits, it is a breakup album (and indeed, the chosen title is meant to signify regarding ex).

Ex:Re is a collaboration with 4AD sound engineer Fabian Prynn and cellist Josephine Stephenson.

An element that convinced me to consider this project among the best of last year is the lively and fitting rhythm of these tracks. Romance might be a hazy disco ambient with its European late-night club atmosphere. I mainly appreciate the guitar in Crushing, as it seems to outline the restlessness of an ever-growing crush.

If this concept were an action, it would be expatriating from companionship, wandering in solitude in search of a cure, whatever that may be.

Because in the end, writing about one's dramas might really be the best exorcism, as many greats have confirmed; maybe even listening to them as in the case of Ex:Re, so why not give it a try?
