It was not easy to replicate a small great jewel like the previous "Woodface", but Crowded House have managed it with this "Together alone". In my opinion, this band has embodied like few others the perfect fusion between rock and pop melodies, spiced with Beatles-esque echoes that seem to come directly from the renowned Lennon-McCartney duo.
Specifically, "T.A." is less blatantly Beatles-like than the previous one (although "Pineapple head" is somewhat their "Norwegian wood"), but the pop-rock cocktail prepared in this album is one that astonishes and satisfies with the skillful, and at times ingenious, combination of rhythms, electric and acoustic guitars, and choruses (or double vocals). Just dive into the initial "Kare kare" and immediately the aforementioned ingredients emerge; then the pace picks up with "In my command", and "Fingers of love" is the first, beautiful ballad.
Crowded House also know how to be "muscular", without losing their characteristics in "Black and white boy", truly captivating, and "Locked out". "Private universe" strikes for its originality (especially for the rhythmic texture, also highlighted by the acoustic guitar phrasings), and "Distant sun", which was released as a single at the time, is pure melodic euphoria.
The rest, except perhaps "Skin feelin" which mimics "The fly" by U2 a bit too much, is, even if not cited, on par with the other tracks.
This album was their swan song, excluding "Afterglow", but also their most successful commercial album. In summary, a great album from a great band, unfortunately disbanded. When will there be another band like this?
