The abyss into which Coldplay is descending seems to have no end.

A band that debuted with an amazing album at the start of the millennium (Parachutes) created great hopes. It seemed to delve into that shadow of Rock where U2 couldn’t succeed, whom the four were initially inspired by, without hiding it too much.

But the second album disappointed expectations, even though there were remarkable episodes. From there, a progressive abandonment of Rock towards a glossy, plastic pop afflicted by arrangement gigantism (like "All That You Can’t Leave Behind" from their mentors, so to speak).

Of this latest album, I believe, there was no need, because it sounds exactly like the previous ones, with the added problem that the lyrics are astonishingly banal (right from the title, as in the case of "feels like I'm falling in love"; or like the first line of "Good Feelings": "we fell in love in summer" along with the autotuned squeals in the background). It's all already heard and also terribly disjointed. There's the electronic song, the acoustic one, the purely mainstream radio one, and the one with collaborations with rap artists that are so trendy now. In short, an album with no head nor tail and fundamentally mediocre. Even if Coldplay's mediocrity might be the excellence of other bands.

The band has announced two more albums before ending their career. If they have to continue down this path, it would be better to stop here. But if they're planning to produce music that’s a bit more refined, less catchy, and more mature, they're welcome. We've understood that they know how to make mainstream pop: why not try their hand at something else? They have the ability!

Ah, I almost forgot: of the lunar music referred to in the album title, very few notes. The title made me listen to it, deluding me into thinking it could be a change of direction. Perhaps the disappointment stems from this.
