Occasionally, along the ethereal paths, one stumbles upon an excellent album: because it stands out from the herd, from the vast sea, because in its own way it is special, it gets inside you and never lets you go.
The Dying Truth by Cianide (a name, a program) is not just any album, not background music: it is bestial death metal, cruel, extreme music that seeks no compromises. Already the opener Mindscrape, perhaps the least inspired of the work, sets things straight: we are greeted by a parched growl over a very slow, suffocating guitar thread, with strong doom hues, and here I provoke: might this be the "true" death metal?
Few are the opportunities for headbanging; The Dying Truth stabs, depresses, every time you recover, a damned snare hit kicks you back on the canvas. Two songs stand out above all: Scourging at the Pillar, with an interlude dense with caustic bile before the final outburst, and Funeral, a nasty, mean song, full of riffs that ooze vitriol. An album that eats your soul, there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but the tunnel goes on endlessly, narrow and dark...
Perhaps the subsequent A Descent Into Hell is more well-known, but the excellent album is this one...
Until next time.
