Behind the name Charlottefield is a fairly skilled yet classic rock quartet*, based in Brighton (UK).
After making a name for themselves through a handful of singles interspersed with various appearances on underground-rock compilations, they finally arrived at the second and globally convincing long-distance effort at the beginning of 2008 (their debut work, "How Long Are You Staying", dates back to 2005), thanks to the release on FatCat Records.
The expressive style presented to us over the course of eight tracks swings in an appreciable and balanced manner between a noise-rock that is not particularly derivative, never excessively loud and abrasive (although in some tracks the "edges" are effectively sharp), and an instrumental-structural attitude of the post/math-rock school; upon encountering the fine, subtly Helmetian chaos organized in the dynamic and frontal opening track ("Beatings"), one would expect the usual descent (or ascent) into the murky depths of the "usual" swamp composed of inextricable riffs, braying screams, and spurts of smoking lava to gleefully wallow in: on the contrary, starting from the second track ("Late Repeat"), the work evolves brilliantly, maneuvering between more restrained solutions and powerful shots with solutions, often unexpected, featuring an intense exuberance and fresh execution and a lyricism worthy of mention.
At the end of the generously extended half-hour delivered to our attention, there is a clear sense that the four are fundamentally motivated by the best intentions to attempt (often succeeding) to create a rock-blueprint that moves away, while still remaining tied to the aforementioned expressive coordinates, from the already widely heard and the lethargic repetition of the usual more or less well-known sound-bacchanalian clichés.
