Antonio and Felice are two former theater actors, famous for their disguises. However, since evidently theater does not earn them enough, they decide to exploit their "en travesti" skills to organize scams against the fool of the moment.

Among the two of them, it's Antonio who mainly needs the money, as he often has to pay the onerous fees of the boarding school where his daughter Diana studies.

One day, however, he learns that among those he's scammed is also the son of the city commissioner, who in the meantime has become the fiancé of his daughter.

Antonio then decides to confess everything to the commissioner, who tells him he can be saved only by returning the money to the most recent victims. The man doesn't have a penny, but his daughter Diana comes to his rescue as she...

The film features scenes that have now become very famous, such as the sale of the Trevi Fountain, the ambassador from Katongo (with the famous line "questo animalo dice pure -pummarola ngoppa-"), and Mrs. Lola (a Totò disguised as a woman mocking the landlord by saying "lei con quegli occhi mi spoglia... Spogliatoio!"). Additionally, Totò-Antonio and Taranto-Felice manage the not-so-easy feat of making something illegal and unlikable like a scam entertaining. And what is comedy, if not laughing even at human flaws?

A great classic to watch and rewatch, which never stops making you laugh...
