The Profile

Boredoms are a Japanese experimental/noise rock group formed in the mid-1980s and led by Yamatsuka Eye. Emerging from the wrecking-ball chaos of Hanatarash, they evolved from hyperactive noise sprees to trance-psychedelic, drum-driven epics, with landmark albums like Super æ and Vision Creation Newsun and large-scale Boa Drum performances.

Japanese experimental group led by Yamatsuka Eye; early releases aligned with extreme noise and anti-rock tactics; later phase emphasized multi-drum psychedelia. Collaborated with the broader avant scene (Eye with John Zorn’s Naked City). Performed the 77 Boa Drum event with 77 drummers in Brooklyn on 07/07/2007. Also issued a long-running Super Roots series and adopted the alias V∞redoms during the 2000s.

DeBaser’s reviews chart Boredoms’ arc from anarchic noise chaos to trance-psychedelic rhythm rituals. Highlights include Pop Tatari’s wild collisions, Super æ and Vision Creation Newsun’s cosmic surge, and Seadrum/House of Sun’s aquatic hypnosis. The 77 Boa Drum project crowns their drum-centric era. Led by Yamatsuka Eye, these records defy rock grammar and chase pure momentum.
