First of all, the thing that almost shocked me (I swear)... I've never seen so many girls at a concert...okay, I've never even seen a concert of Tozzi/Masini/Ramazzotti/Backstreet Boys...but in my (almost) fifteen-year concert-going career, this time the fairer sex was almost 40%...at the Hermano concert last week, there were in total...about 6 girls...last night everything was different, and lots of young people, besides the usual faces of the "concert-going Torinos" (I feel like I almost know you all, guys)...so this is the new form of rock that young people like, and it's welcomed, at least it raises a good notch from the flatness that surrounds us and doesn't bother the usual rock dinosaurs...which I'm now finding hard to digest...
A mini note on the... shameful supporting band... whose name I've fortunately already managed to forget... basically a trio doing a poor imitation of Stereolab (whom I love...)...and they think they're the new Kraftwerk... annoying is still a compliment... some girls were dancing... boh... the best thing about these 3 was the shirt with the light bulb... that they occasionally had fun turning on (almost) in time with their nonsense... end of the support.
Our guys enter energized, and with all the (huge) limitations of the acoustics at the Teatro della Concordia, they manage very admirably...they all exude a mixture of tenderness/charm... even the drummer, similar to a classic nerd, wearing a tank top that even Bossi wouldn't wear anymore... yet he turns out to be the backbone of the group with good technique and really enviable precision/power... the bassist follows him as he should for such a talent... the guitarist does what he needs to do, much more attentive to the look than the others, but one can understand it... heck if I were the guitarist of a famous band, at the very least I would tattoo my arms like a shirt... and so on, more than his technique, I liked his sound... rather personal... just like our Kele Oreke (what kind of name is that?)... a singer with a very particular voice that fits well with the sound of the group.... anyway, there's no contest... the first album is light-years ahead of the second.... Silent Alarm is a deadly collection of 14 songs, each (none excluded) more than worthy of being a true smash single... an album without a flaw or a slight drop in tone, so beautiful and compact that it competes on equal terms with my favorite records...
...all of this is indeed felt live....when any song from Silent starts, the crowd explodes... heads move, people dance and feel the vibrations of their music, with great ability to escalate the tension to the sky in each piece and then resolve it with masterful talent... all of this is lost in the new songs of Weekend in the City... all retreating into the stupor of "verse-chorus-verse" without a definite direction... merely self-serving with sometimes glimpses of the vitality that seems lost...
...I hope for them for a future with lots of good music... but I'm worried... in conclusion, still, great concert, it was worth being there!!
