The Happy Mondays ended the project in 1992, mainly due to the numerous addictions of frontman Shaun Ryder.
In 1995, Ryder returned to the music scene seemingly sober with a new group and a new album, accompanied by the psychopathic Bez, two rappers named Kermit and Psycho (members of the Ruthless Rap Assassins), Jed Lynch on drums (also from RRA), Paul "Wags" Wagstaff on guitar, and Anthony Guarderas on bass.
You might say mostly unknown musicians to the big scenes, but very talented and cohesive. The album was, in fact, an unexpected commercial success in some respects.
Clearly inspired by the sound of the Happy Mondays, the group showcases an eclectic style, with its wide array of instruments used (e.g., harmonica, sitar, sax), which feels fresh and new.
They are enthusiastic, carefree, and festive: Ryder does his best with surreal, almost nonsensical lyrics and rhymes; Kermit and Psycho add an extra touch with that schizophrenic Rap; the rhythm section manages to create different sounds for each track, shifting from funky grooves, to calmer and introspective ones, to sharp ones that marry with such catchy and Pop choruses, I would say, where no instrument is ignored and is easily distinguishable.
To get an idea, I recommend the classic singles: "Reverend Black Grape" (which draws inspiration from the interpretation of "Step On" by the Happy Mondays), "Kelly's Heroes", and "In The Name Of The Father".
A bold and spot-on album like few others, ideal for bringing back good humor.
