Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan, April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer known for her emotive phrasing, unique timbre and influential interpretations of standards. She had a career from the 1930s through the 1950s and struggled with addiction and health problems later in life.

Birth name Eleanora Fagan; nickname 'Lady Day'. Last major studio recordings include Lady in Satin (recorded February 1958).

DeBaser reviews praise Billie Holiday's deeply expressive, wounded voice. Lady in Satin is described as a dramatic, controversial late statement backed by a large orchestra. Lady Sings the Blues is called pure poetry and true suffering captured in song.

For:Fans of classic jazz, vocal jazz, and listeners who appreciate melancholic, emotive singing.

Notoriously, few sounds are as bitter and heartbreaking as the dusty ones coming from the descending curtain.
