THE REVIEW

"Atomizer" is perhaps my favorite album of the '80s. Steve Albini is a genius, one of the best composers of the post-war period, who in this album manages to perfectly blend Hardcore, Noise, and Industrial without ever being repetitive. The distorted guitars and the intentionally poor production make the album very raw.

Albini unleashes all his pent-up anger with Kerosene (perhaps the best track on the whole CD), then seems to calm down with Bad Houses, which is mainly based on the same drum pattern and a sharp riff from a highly distorted and noisy guitar. The lyrics are very sparse, very angry; Albini has no qualms and writes extremely violent lyrics (see Kerosene).

Atomizer by Big Black is hailed as a standout 80s album by Steve Albini, skillfully mixing hardcore, noise, and industrial genres. Its raw, distorted sound and aggressive lyrics make it a powerful listen. Highlights include the intense track 'Kerosene' and the compelling 'Bad Houses.' A near-perfect, high-energy release rated 9/10.

Big Black

Big Black was an American noise-rock band formed in 1981 in the Chicago area by Steve Albini. Known for abrasive guitars, stark lyrics, and a rigid drum machine, they released two seminal albums—Atomizer (1986) and Songs About Fucking (1987)—before disbanding in 1987.

Albini literally tears apart the guitar riff and disjointedly reassembles it, so that the engine of the track is a sort of zombie riff, on the verge of derailing into the piercing screech of the chorus.

Albini is the mad surgeon of rock music.
