My thirst for death remains unquenched; I find myself once again in the realm of the English band Benediction.
It's their first long-distance release from 1990, produced by then Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris. The album marks the debut as a vocalist of a bold and long-haired young man: Mark "Barney" Greenway, who shortly after would leave the band to join Napalm Death.
Primal Death Metal of the highest order; dirty and wicked as necessary. But they don't seek extreme speed, although there are sections where they go full throttle. They aim, successfully, for a personal modus operandi by slowing down the pace in many tracks; dark, stormy, and phlegmatic mid-tempo that highlight the sinister drumming of Ian Tracey. The rest of the band adapts to this tentacular approach: solid guitars, dark and pounding bass.
Recording quality just above mediocrity, but that's enough; it's not the album I prefer from the band. They will know how to win me over and shock me with the destructive grandeur of their masterpiece "Transcend The Rubicon."
Returning to the debut as a point of comparison, we are close to the barbaric heaviness of their fellow Bolt Thrower.
One track is enough for me to highlight the album's qualities: the title track that opens with "Sloooooow" vomited into the face by Mark's chilling growl. Immediately after, the total auditory pandemonium begins.
One of the most representative album covers in all of Death Metal.
Praise and (blasphemous) glory to the band from Birmingham...Grizzled Finale...
Ad Maiora.

11 Experimental Stage (03:40)
Clawed fingers forcing iron bars,
Visions of tortured misery.
Semi-human tears of frustrated rage,
Hunched up in this fuckin' cage.
My emotions are artificially induced.
Though no further need to feel.
Now I've fabricated steel limbs,
Electro-pulses throb within.
Man made monster,
Morbid science.
Deaf to my feeble protests,
I've served my purpose.
In my veins life fluid used to flow.
Now drained and replaced.
With sedative substances,
To restrain instinctive rage.
Man made monster,
Morbid science.
Deaf to my feeble protests,
I've served my purpose.
