What we are faced with is something that is difficult to define, a very glam album but with distinctly progressive strokes and sci-fi digressions. An immediately recognizable sound, thanks to both the voice and Bill Nelson's unique guitar style. Ladies and gentlemen, here is a magnificent gem from the English Underground scene: Futurama.

Futurama is not the usual Glam album, it is something more.

Let's try to give an example: how did you feel after listening to John Barleycorn Must Die?
I know very well that the comparison may not be suitable, yet both situations have one thing in common: theirs is a fresh, new, different sound! It's not the usual stuff of just guitars, bass, and drums. These are the bands that have tried to break out, to experiment beyond the known sounds. And it is thanks to them that music has moved forward! (Oh my, then it also regressed, actually... But let's not talk about it, it's better that way...)

Be Bop Deluxe came out with their first album entitled "Axe Victim" in 1974, the year when, for better or worse, the last masterpieces of progressive were released.

However, their best moment comes in 1975, the year Futurama was released. The sound that comes out of the speakers is absolutely innovative, not so much because it is experimental or related to the world of Stockhausen, but rather because it is strong, it is powerful but also creative and unheard of. Virtuosity and melodies often come together willingly.
The result can be summed up in the potential hit "Music In Dreamland". Fantasy atmospheres that somehow recall the Canterbury progressive. It's an extravagant music as well, as evidenced by the inclusion of orchestral winds and heavily effected guitar, especially with the delay, which gives the song a kind of uncommon movement that is difficult to replicate in other sound structures.

In short, whether you listen to Hard Rock, Pop, Funeral Doom Progressive Metal or any other genre, you must, regardless, give this album a listen.

In my opinion, one of the best underground records of that period...

Tracklist Lyrics and Videos

01   Stage Whispers (03:05)

02   Love With the Madman (03:12)

03   Maid in Heaven (02:26)

She's a maid in Heaven
He's a knight on the tiles; a bat out of Hell, oh well
It's just a question of style

It's a time for giving
In the two star hotel where breakfast in bed per head
It's just the price of a smile

I know it's not easy to live this way
Just an hour and a fleeting kiss 'til the morning

Silent nights of wonders
Day breaks through the door broken and torn, reborn
Two shadows thrown on the floor

Hold me now, go lightly
Take the rough with the smooth, a token of love, my love
Was made in heaven for you
It's made in heaven for you
It's made in heaven for you
