Asesino are one of Dino Cazares' projects (Fear Factory, Divine Heresy, ex-Brujeria) featuring drummer Emilio Marquez, also known as El Sadistico (Sadistic Intent/Possessed, ex-Brujeria), and bassist/vocalist Tony Campos alias Maldito X (Static-X, session musician for Ministry).
Formed after the split between the great Dino and Brujeria, they aim to continue Brujeria's musical discourse in an even faster and more extreme way by offering a brutal modern grind-death metal with a Mexican twist and themes as far as possible from politically correct: sex, drugs, satanism, drug trafficking, pedophilia.
"Cristo Satanico" is the second (and, to date, latest, it was released in 2006 but only reached Europe in 2008) album of the group in question, and it proves to be a winner from every point of view, from the riffing (a guarantee when it comes to Cazares) to the powerful vocals (which differ slightly from Brujeria by being much more death metal at times), to the tight rhythm section, but most importantly, it has the songs, a difficult genre like extreme metal is often accused of monotony and lack of "memorable" tracks, Asesino dispel all that, the power of the opening track "Regresando Odio" (featuring guest appearances by Jamey Jasta from Hatebreed and Andreas Kisser from Sepultura, renamed for the occasion as El Odio the first one, and Sepulculo the second), the cadenced and hellish mid-tempo of "Padre Pedofilo" (a text that will certainly not bring joy to the Vatican), the sharp assaults of "Enterrado Vivo" (which ends with the moans of a poor soul buried alive), "Puta con Pito" (literally prostitute with male appendage) or the diabolical "Maldito" will surely leave a mark on the listener.
Worthy of a special mention is the hilarious "Y Tu Mama Tambien", musically it's a mockery from dear old Dino towards emo-core (complete with a very "emotional" chorus), lyrically it's even better as it depicts the touching dialogue between two newlyweds, with the male explaining to his fiancée the hidden qualities (and the best and most transgressive offers) of her mother, a real show.
In conclusion, "Cristo Satanico" is an excellent product, one of the best extreme metal albums released in recent years, objectively 5 stars may be too much but it's an album I've literally worn out, and the band is one of my all-time favorites so I still give it full marks.
