Anyone who listens to this record should know that this is not a normal album. This is a work of art. With this creation, Anathema provides the ideal complement to SERENADES and THE SILENT ENIGMA.
ETERNITY is, in fact, the perfect conclusion to what is the first period of their career.
But already now the music has definitely changed; the tracks are more melodic, although as anguished and dark as ever, and moreover, Vincent Cavanagh adopts a clean singing style here.
Opening the album after the instrumental intro is ANGELICA, one of the absolute masterpieces of the English group. We could almost define it as a ballad with a somber melody and a heart-wrenching sadness capable of evoking great emotion.
The tones become more intense with THE BELOVED and the first part of the title track ETERNITY PT.1, a dramatic piece in its progression and once again emotionally intense.
This is followed by the spectral ETERNITY PT.2 and HOPE.
The seventh track, SUICIDE VEIL, is probably the most distressing piece ever composed by the group.
The track progresses in the grimmest of ways, leading to a central section in which Vincent sings with desperate anger that tears at the heart. And in the end, only the faint sound of rain accompanied by the notes of an acoustic guitar.
Following RADIANCE and the desperate FAR AWAY (worth mentioning is the lyrics of this piece), here comes ETERNITY PT.3, probably the best track on the album, where once again Anathema demonstrates an enviable ability to infuse all the songs with a devastating emotional charge in all its despair and darkness.
Finally, CRIES ON THE WIND and ASCENSION close what is yet another masterpiece from an extraordinary band that has been able to compose unique and unforgettable tracks with each album.
