THE REVIEW

The bearer of light was thus hurled to earth, cast out of paradise.

Layne screams: "Into the flood again, same old trip it was back then. So I made a big mistake trying to see it once my way".

He tried to see the world his way, but he made a grave mistake. As if he were that demon, once an archangel, trapped in the depths of the earth.

Nihilistic and powerless. Scourge of yourself. You feel the missed opportunities and the guilt striking your soul like poison to your senses, like a bell being punched.

And you feel it with the ultimate and fateful question: "Have I run too far to get home, have I gone and left you here alone?".

Jerry Cantrell wrote it for Andrew Wood, who died of an overdose some time before, and fate and needles drove frontman Layne Staley to hurl himself from the same cliff. It was also included in the Singles soundtrack alongside tracks by Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (in the writer's opinion, the song had little or nothing to do with the film in question) and it became also the destructive anthem of Alice, their trademark.

Trademark is a term that fits the song and the events that characterized the band's history like a glove. The same trademark that Layne would exactly ten years later tear from his body. He was neither a hero nor a martyr. Just a poor guy left at the mercy of himself and fed to his depression.
