THE REVIEW

AC/DC are incredibly fortunate to have a legion of fans not only willing to buy every album they release but also incapable of realizing how awful they are. And this has been the case since 1980. Unfortunately, after Back In Black, AC/DC became simply ridiculous, suited, perhaps surpassed only by Guns 'N Roses, to the "band loved by those who claim to be great fans of Rock" status. The problem is that Angus & co. realized that each album they released would rake in money for a group that is now as good as dead and buried. And so, Flick Of The Switch, Fly On The Wall, Blow Up Your Video, The Razor's Edge, Ballbreaker, Stiff Upper Lip, Black Ice. And it's not certain that the dung has ended. I choose Ballbreaker essentially for two reasons: it was reviewed only once, and positively, and because it is perhaps the worst of the indigenous band's albums.

But what to say about Ballbreak... ahem, Ballbreaker?

Let's say the leading track is represented by Hard As A Rock; definitely worse than the humblest of tracks from the Scott era. An unbearably dull riff and an astonishingly banal lyric will "escort" us for four and a half minutes. Actually, no, even longer, because two perfect clones follow: Cover You In Oil and Furor. Tracks where the rotund Johnson's screams showcase all his (lack of) talent. Let's overlook that pathetic attempt to return to the roots represented by that absurd blues of Boogie Man. Honey Roll, heard a thousand times before, but it's less disgusting than its predecessors. A similar case with Burnin' Alive. Irritating choruses torment us in Hail Caesar. Identical to half the discography is Love Bomb. Caught With Your Pants Down is, as usual, dominated by Brian's nauseating voice. I refrain from discussing Whiskey On The Rocks to avoid repeating the same story. Ballbreaker follows, a sincere homage to the album.

A full 51 minutes have passed since we put on the CD. An hour of total disgust. let's clarify what makes this album so tiresome:

 1. The never so ungraceful screams of one of the worst vocalists in the genre

 2. The barely noticeable bass of Cliff Williams

 3. The incredible flatness of the songs and the fact that they all sound the same

 4. The extremely ugly cover

This is a rock-solid, hard album, in pure AC/DC style, just for a change.

There isn’t a track on this record that makes you cringe.
