THE REVIEW

The Abscess were born from the ashes of Autopsy thanks to the will of Chris Reifert (and Danny Coralles), a leading figure in the death metal world. One certainly cannot reproach this individual for a lack of consistency, as he has always been a champion of the most uncompromising and Traditional death metal, uninterested in the sociological interpretations of the living dead; for him, they are just man-eating monsters that, if you're lucky, will eat you, and if you're not, will rape you.

"Urine Junkies" is the first work as Abscess and in some aspects is somewhat a continuation of Autopsy's latest work "Shitfun". Just consider the titles and the artwork: feces in the first case and urine in the second, complete with close-ups (almost a sort of stardom for digestion products). The lyrics are also in line with the previous work, a mix of gore and sick sex dealing with rotten genitals, mutants born from incest, chugging menstrual blood, and infections. The common points with Autopsy end here, as the sound and production are quite different.

As for the sound, a more varied use of vocals is immediately noticeable, ranging from classic growls to more strangled screams, while the music is a very raw death metal with grind and punk influences (although more in attitude than sound). Tracks like "Urine Junkies" and "Unquenchable Thirst" could be a middle ground between Napalm Death's first side of "Scum" and Repulsion, while others, like "Horny Hag" or "Suicide Fuck" (complete with chorus), have a more punkish pace. There are also tracks where some compositional reminiscence of the previous band can be heard, such as "Raw Sewage" or "Blacktooth Beast". The tracks were recorded in three different sessions, and it shows, consistently offering a rough and dirty sound.

An excellent album devoid of unnecessary virtuosity and philosophical discourses, I would say very rock.

Summary by Bot

Abscess' debut album Urine Junkies continues the legacy of Autopsy’s extreme death metal, featuring raw, varied vocals and a blend of death metal and punk influences. The grotesque, explicit lyrics match the unpolished, rough production recorded over multiple sessions. This album offers a fierce, no-frills experience that emphasizes attitude over technical virtuosity.
