The spaceship was tiny, she remained strapped to the seat with the suit and helmet on for all 70 hours and 50 minutes of the flight. The absence of weight made her feel sick. «At one point I vomited», she recounted. On the second day her right leg started to hurt, by the third the pain had become unbearable. The helmet pressed on one shoulder, a sensor on her head caused continuous itching, the conditions inside the suit with the vomiting and everything else can only be vaguely imagined. The Vostok spacecrafts were not able to ensure the cosmonauts' survival at the moment of impact with the Earth's surface. So, after reentry, Valentina was «shot out» by an explosive charge, as happens on jets in case of emergency.
«I was terrified while descending with the parachute», she said. «Below me there was a lake and not solid ground. We had been trained for this eventuality but I did not know if I would have the strength needed to survive». The wind, luckily, pushed her away. But on impact Valentina hit her face against the helmet and got a big bruise on her nose. She was sore, dirty, semi-conscious and was immediately taken to the hospital. But for the honor of the Soviet Union the return of the first woman from space had to be triumphant. So, as soon as she recovered, she was brought back to the same area wearing an immaculate suit and ready to show her best smile to the cameras.
