In Norway something changed...(Black Metal...The History pt I) It was 1983 when Euronymous (the owner of a small record shop in Oslo) decided to form a "pagan-satanic" cult which I call Inner Circle (or as some say "Inner Black Circle"). The purpose of this cult was to bring paganism back into a world that was destroyed by Christianity many years before...as a prominent figure in this story (which I will tell you later) said, "Christianity made us weak, now we no longer die in battle...Christianity has reduced us to dying old and finished in a hospital bed...". These were more or less the ideas of this community...Euronymous felt so compelled to start expressing this hatred for everything "Christian" that "infected" his land... This genre would be called "Black Metal"...hate, destroy, devastate everything and everyone...these were the ideals, this was everything Euronymous and his growing cult believed in. They began burning churches, and the more they burned, the more the cult grew. Euronymous, driven by the expansion of the Inner Circle, wanted to spread it worldwide, "a too big project"... thought Varg Vikernes (the character I mentioned earlier), he had different ideas,"The cult must free Norway...that is what it must be", while Euronymous with more open ideas, "let's do things big", the two became the most important members of the cult, equally respected...but.... Varg, despite being a rival of Mayhem (Euronymous's band), with his Burzum (where Varg Vikernes plays all instruments, including vocals), could not, due to his lack of charisma and iron fist, impose his theory regarding paganism. The ideas of Euronymous and Varg began to diverge significantly; in fact, the former developed a certain tendency toward Satanism, while Varg remained fully committed to his belief in pagan gods, principles of those lands where he was born. Even their musical styles (although both still black metal) started to differ: Burzum was characterized by its "slow and repetitive with ambient backgrounds," although it initially started as black trash inspired clearly by Mayhem themselves, who under Euronymous's guidance preached paganism with satanic backgrounds. In 1991, Dead, the vocalist of Mayhem, died, and Euronymous lost ground compared to Vikernes because of this... Dead was considered one of the best singers of that time (at least by many among today's blacksters), but he had the flaw of being sad, depressed... at 10 years old, he already hated life and wanted to die. He slit his wrists and then shot himself in the head almost as if wanting to leave a mark of scenography (typical of black metal) at his death... the other members of the band discovered his body, and before calling the police, they took a photo that they later used as the cover of their next live. The cover was macabre and was withdrawn from sale... A gypsy once prophesied the future to Euronymous (so "the legend" says), foretelling an imminent death. Of course, he immediately thought it was a murder by Vikernes... In 1993, Varg went to Oslo to Euronymous's house to discuss a contract with one of the record labels. The Mayhem guitarist knew Varg's intentions and tried to escape, while Vikernes chased him with a knife. Euronymous died... after about 26 stabs to the back, exactly as Viking tradition prescribed: anyone who killed someone from behind was considered a hero. He died there... on the stairs of his house, after ringing all the doors of his building. Meanwhile, outside Euronymous's house, another person was watching Vikernes perform the act—BlackThrone, another member of Mayhem. Vikernes was sentenced to 21 years in prison (plus 22 months later added for his attempted escape) and 8 years for BlackThrone for complicity with Varg. From that very significant day, philosophical black metal died; however, this event marked the exit of black metal from complete underground status and led to greater development of the genre, as many bands, inspired by the story, sought to emulate Mayhem and Burzum. Contrary to what one might think, Burzum was not hated but was also loved by some. Black metal on a global scale was taken over by bands like Immortal and Dark Thorne, which then formed the two missing schools of black metal, after the first two formed by Mayhem and Burzum. All subsequent bands based their styles on these four important schools... only later did some exceptions develop, which I will explain later (such as the birth of folk/black metal and the introduction of keyboards and electronic music into second-generation black metal).... It is only a step toward knowledge... every story evokes strong emotions as well as curiosity about the ending... everything depends on waiting... the day you await will come...
Greet with joy!
