From the depths of the night that envelops me
dark as the deepest well that stretches from pole to pole,
I thank the gods whoever they may be
for my unconquerable soul.

In the fierce grip of circumstances
I have not flinched nor cried out in anguish.
Under the axe blows of fate
my head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
looms but the horror of shadows
and still the threat of years
finds me, and will find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the life.
I am the master of my fate.
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley
