Let's immediately clear up two points that someone might raise about this new, beautiful album by Abissi. 1. Abissi don't sound like Verdena, but better than Verdena, who, now too caught up in trying to find magic (to cite the title of the upcoming album) have lost their way for quite some time (since "Wow") from what was supposed to be a very precise path on which they made their fortune; the face-slapping rock. Abissi, right from the first track ("Bilocazioni," power pop with elephantine guitars that lash the song form) make things clear. Rock, with its derivatives (stoner first, but also metal, doom, and screamingly psychedelic touches) is the word. A word they propose to us with great personality. 2. Labeling the band as an imitation of the stoner encyclopedia and the like (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) or grunge (Nirvana) or similar grunge metal (Melvins) is a game for short-sighted people. Abissi, with their desire to go "beyond," to explore, indeed, abysses, open unusual doors for the sonic violence of the aforementioned bands and musical genres. The doors they fling open, thanks to a voice that seems to come from another space, another time, and to psychedelic wandering, go beyond derivations. Also, the choice to sing in Italian helps. Because, as we know, Italian is not English, and the singer of Abissi is neither Layne of Alice nor Josh of Queens. Clap clap to Abissi. No compromise! Keep going like this.
