"When someone writes a review about an album whose genre is not among their favorites and calls it a masterpiece, there are two things: either it is absolutely true or they've made a huge blunder"

French-speaking musicians (not just French) seem to have a different soul from the English. I think of Genoa and its singer-songwriter scene that could not avoid such influences and I remember ZNR and "Barricade 3" from the distant 1976, the debut album of the French duo Hector Zazou and Joseph Racaille.

A different CD from my others, music arranged and produced in minimalist terms, mostly piano, clarinet, and the synthesizers VCS3 and ARP2600 used with such intelligence and sensitivity that they sound timeless in the atmosphere of Barricade 3.

Under the inspiring aura of Satie, the compositions of Zazou and Racaille convey a wide spectrum of sensations, from gray melancholy to the most playful carefreeness in a kaleidoscope of rare emotions to find in an experimental work. For this reason, I dare to call it a masterpiece.

To be rediscovered.

P.S. A heartfelt thanks also to Recommended Records of Cris Cutler for reissuing it on CD in '93.
