Great land of California, yes, the land of punk rock has never ceased to amaze and so, among one band and another, occasionally we come across some interesting work. Among the many, there is "MFZB," the third effort by Zebrahead.
Regarding the quintet's skill, nothing to say, even back in the days of the hit "Playmate Of The Year", there was that freshness that is so lacking in the emo world these days. At first glance, MFZB is very listenable and enjoyable to hear. Certainly, the formula is always the same, the winning one to be precise, classic "Offspring Style" punk rock occasionally mixed with some rapcore solos.
The Orange County quintet ranges greatly, from ballads like "House Is Not My Home" and "Runaway" to the more pop-punk "Hello Tomorrow" and "The Set-Up" all the way to harder tracks like "Falling Apart" and "Alone" (soundtracks of the console game Smackdown vs Raw), with the amusing presence of Ali Tabatabaee’s rap parts.
A bit annoying is the sampling present in "Dear You" that refers too much to "Fly Away From Here" by Aerosmith.
Funny and melodic, but never predictable and always open to some pleasant surprises, that is MFZB, those were "Zebrahead", then never returned to the same level also due to the change in leadership, (Matty Lewis replaced the charismatic Justin Mauriello in 2004), and whether we like it or not, this is California, pleasantly predictable land of punk rock.
