Formed in Palm Desert in 1986 by Gary Arce, Alfredo Hernández and cousins Mario and Larry Lalli. Early material consists of late-1980s desert jams; the first official release under the name Yawning Man was the LP Rock Formations (2005). Their demo tapes have been collected in The Birth of Sol (The Demo Tapes).

Influential on the Palm Desert scene and later bands such as Kyuss (Kyuss covered "Catamaran"). Members and associates have been involved with Fatso Jetson. Known for generator-party jam sessions and instrumental, psychedelic, surf-tinged guitar work.
