Remember "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain"? If you haven't seen it, you must have at least heard of it. In Jeunet's film, there are three protagonists: the talented and, allow me to say, adorable Audrey Tautou, Paris, and the music of Yann Tiersen.
Our subject is a young composer and multi-instrumentalist with good experience behind him, including the release (in Italy) of one of his albums, "Le Phare," with Taccuini, the "niche" series of the Independent Producers Consortium.
At the same time as the release of his album "L'Absente," Tiersen received the proposal to score the film. Perhaps these tight deadlines are the reason he sourced much of the soundtrack's material from his previous works. The opportunity to choose the best of his work turned out to be a winning strategy. Overall, he showcases a series of small and charming compositions with a Parisian flavor, like many musical souvenirs, numerous waltzes such as "La Valse d'Amélie" (the main theme present in three versions) or "La Valse des Monstres," which almost references Les Négresses Vertes. There are tracks with a dreamy vibe whose sound toys evoke his compatriot Pascal Comelade. Others are orchestral, like "Les Jours Tristes," with themes often entrusted to a very French accordion.
The list of instruments played by Tiersen is significant: toy piano, music box, banjo, mandolin, harpsichord, vibraphone, accordion, piano, bass, and melodica. He is accompanied by the Synaxis Orchestra, and on the track "À Quai," if you listen carefully, you can hear Christine Ott on the Ondes Martenot, a type of keyboard theremin. The minimal solo piano tracks are of great beauty, including "La Dispute," my favorite. Today's musical Paris doesn't resemble Tiersen's, and this probably adds a melancholic sensation that contributed to the success of the film and the album. Many Debaserians will find it excessively sentimental, and I can't contradict them. It's excellent as a background, especially when organizing a fashion show (all the designers have used it...) or when creating a somber news report for a TV program.
Tracklist and Lyrics
13 La Dispute (04:17)
Anyway, i can try anything it's the same circle that leads to nowhere and i'm tired now.
anyway, i've lost my face, my dignity, my look, everything is gone and i'm tired now.
but don't be scared, i found a good job and i go to work every day on my old bicycle you loved.
i am pilling up some unread books under my bed and i really think i'll never read again.
no concentration, just a white disorder everywhere around me, you know i'm so tired now.
don't worry i often go to dinners and parties with some old friends who care for me, take me back home and stay.
monochrome floors, monochrome walls, only abscence near me, nothing but silence around me.
monochrome flat, monochrome life, only abscence near me, nothing but silence around me.
sometimes i search an event or something to remind me, but i've really got nothing in mind.
sometimes i open the windows and listen people walking in the down streets. there is a life out there.
but don't be scared, i found a good job and i go to work every day on my old bicycle you loved.
anyway, i can try anything it's the same circle that leads to nowhere and i'm tired now.
anyway, i've lost my face, my dignity, my look, everthing is gone gone and i'm tired now.
but don't be scared, i found a good job and i go to work every day on my old bicycle you loved.
don't worry i often go to dinners and parties with some old friends who care for me, take me back home and stay.
mochrome floors, monochrome walls, only abscence near me, nothing but silence around me.
monochrome flat, monochrome life, only abscence near me, nothing but silence around me
