I don't have it! A Haden album dedicated to America and I don't have it! Excellent description, Symbad, for an album that captures the heart even from the cover.
Yes, Max: it's one of the most beautiful things of recent years. Absolutely. It goes hand in hand with The Art of the Song. If you don’t already have that one, I would humbly recommend getting it paired up (then, little by little, we can pay off the resulting mortgage!) :-) V.
little to nothing to add to what you say, this is a beautiful album as well, even though my first listens left me a bit cold, but over time I managed to appreciate this work a lot. I like that you remembered Shirley Horn who passed away not long ago, we should review something of this great interpreter, there’s no shortage of resources ;)) Hi
... yes, great Shirley! And what about Bill Henderson, who after a glorious career as a high-class crooner is currently acting in sitcoms to make ends meet? Frankly, I was not aware of the existence of this record; but this damn E-bay, with the chance to snag nice records for a song...
This is the full poem printed on the inner cover of the album (the first one, the other is the very short one about the singing trees) by the young Mattie Stepanek, a peace poet from the USA who passed away in 2004 at the age of fourteen (yes, fourteen!): FOR OUR WORLD We need to stop. Just stop. Stop for a moment. Before anybody Says or does anything That may hurt anyone else. We need to be silent. Just silent. Silent for a moment. Before we forever lose The blessing of songs That grow in our hearts. We need to notice. Just notice. Notice for a moment. Before the future slips away Into ashes and dust of humility. Stop, be silent, and notice. In so many ways, we are the same. Our differences are unique treasures. We have, we are, a mosaic of gifts To nurture, to offer, to accept. We need to be. Just be. Be for a moment. Kind and gentle, innocent and trusting, Like children and lambs, Never judging or vengeful Like the judging and vengeful. And now, let us pray, Differently, yet together, Before there is no earth, no life, No chance for peace.
...uh, sorry (you know, age is catching up...) about the cover: the first front image shows this kind of beautiful sunset; inside, there are other images from the same point of view that gradually shift into the dark, until the last back cover where (probably) only the moon illuminates this phone lost in the desert... Haden is definitely a contemporary poet, a minimalist of great class, experience, and taste for beauty, as well as a great witness of jazz art throughout the ages. It's no coincidence that he, along with Dewey Redman (a crazy guy) and Paul Motian, gave the young Jarrett (another chapter to be opened with caution!) the opportunity to form his quartet USA. But this is an unkind digression towards Charlie...
Ah.. if the American dream could manifest itself under these audio-forms/virtues (unlike the other well-known ones), cordial and highly valued de-reviewing Mister Symbad as well as Bassist, I would be the first to want to dive into it without any de-net of protection, on the contrary.. unfortunately, reality (both contemporary and otherwise) teaches that (sphortunatamente) we are far from that and vice versa inversely/proportionally nightmares (especially for those who suffer from someone else's "dream") multiply ever more horrifically antzikhenot. Respectful regards a plenty. Your trita carri[armati] of (s)fiduciam.
:-))) <Your trita carri[armati] di (s)fiduciam> can’t be read!!!! True, but let’s always remember one simple thing: prejudices are global (and difficult to dismantle) while responsibilities are ALWAYS personal or at least definable. To be clear, I would much rather have dinner with the American Charlie Haden than with several local individuals...
What beautiful memories this album brings! A gift from a dear friend, it’s one of Charlie Haden’s records that I’ve listened to the most. One note in particular for the stunning “Travels” (here truly touching), so silky, relaxed, calm, and seductive. And with a moment of truly telepathic dialogue between Mehldau’s soft piano and Charlie Haden’s bass here heartfelt like never before. I also greatly appreciate the carefree and light reading of “Bird Food,” precisely because (as you observed very well, dear bassist) it’s truly an “anomalous” piece in the economy of this album, definitely oriented toward a meditative and intimate tone. A perfect 5-star review, detailed and spot on! JoP
"When the trees sing, [.....]", beautiful but when I think of some situations that surround us, far from reality, to hear the trees sing you need to have "ears" to hear them and "opportunities" to listen to them. Beautiful review as usual.
Hi Symbad. I'm reaching out to you here because I hope you'll read the messages. I've managed to make this "seminal" article available online: Geoff Dyer, Dove va il Jazz, in La musica che abbiamo attraversato, edited by Ranieri Polese, Guanda Publisher, 2005, pp. 31-45. You can find it at this address: link rotto I'm sure it will pique your interest regarding the music you listen to (and play).
I'm sorry. I can't transfer the link. If you're interested in the article, do this: go to www.segnalo.it, on the map go to TRACCE SENTIERI; then go to PAGINE/MUSICA and there - in the Jazz line - look for Geoff Dyer, Dove va il Jazz, in La musica che abbiamo attraversato, edited by Ranieri Polese, Guanda Publisher, 2005, pp. 31-45. bye
Cso Symbad, received. Let me know if you can download this article. Otherwise, I'll send it to you via email. As for tomorrow: I hope the landscape changes. These years have been quite cruel. Only music has softened the vulgarity.
I have this record. Technically flawless, perfect recording, clean sound... and yet I can't bring myself to like it; I find it boring. After reading this review, it seems like it's my fault :)
