I had heard about the Winds Of Funeral, until I met the drummer Panzer in a downtown pub and got to know the guitarist and composer ArcanuM at the gym. And to be honest, the first thing I initially thought was "Well, look at that, even my city has given birth to a black metal band! (I haven't checked, but it's likely not even a unique case...)" Yes, because the Winds of Funeral (the average age in the band, I believe, is around 21) are very Italian and TARANTINI, and Taranto doesn't seem to be famous for its metal scene. It seems only fitting, therefore, to support as much as possible every band that comes to light, when they have talent and quality. And this is their case: "Funeral Wintermoon" is a demo of four tracks lasting twenty minutes, one of the few releases by the band alongside a previously released promo and a split with Cold Moon, and it is enough to understand how love for old-style black metal can give birth to something good.
The Winds Of Funeral from my friend Valerio Petrosillo, in fact, seem to almost play at being little Darkthrone, putting together four raw tracks like only the Norwegian bands of the past knew how to do, and also demonstrating a decent compositional talent; absolutely noteworthy, for example, are the time changes and drum breaks in "Valley Of Nowhere", as well as the slow-depressive atmospheres of "Disgusting Weakness", where they also manage to evoke that right feeling that makes you emotional in front of the song. Not bad at all, especially the screaming of Drengot and the guitar of ArcanuM, with raw and introspective riffs. The only downside: the production. Of course, on one hand, there's the fact that they play old-style black, a genre where raw production is often almost mandatory (who said "Under A Funeral Moon"??), and furthermore being newcomers they couldn't afford much. However, the production here, in my opinion, ruins a good part of the work, just consider that the bass often seems almost like background noise and that the drum sound, perfectly highlighted in the slow parts, risks being too "jumbled" in the faster parts.
Nevertheless, a demo not to be underestimated: bearing in mind that Italy has a scene that is only now awakening, and that certain regions like PUGLIA in particular are not doing so well (Mutala, Disguise... and then??), I can only encourage you to support them. Hopefully, at least one day the demo of my band will be released, considering that the one I used to play in is just now recording it after I've left, darn... So I repeat, support the Winds Of Funeral! These guys truly deserve it, and they are about to prepare a full-length...
