Formed in Richmond, Virginia (2008). Notable vocalist: Dorthia Cottrell. Releases include Soma (2013), Grief's Infernal Flower (2015) and Eternal Return (2018). Associated with Relapse Records for some releases.

The review highlights Windhand's slow, heavy, psychedelic doom textures and the "catatonic female voices" that define much of Soma. Tracks cited include Orchard, Woodbine, Evergreen and Boleskine. The author draws comparisons to Acid King, Sleep, Conan and Cough while calling Soma a noteworthy album within the decade's doom scene. Overall a measured, appreciative 3/5 assessment.

For:Fans of doom, stoner and psychedelic metal; listeners who appreciate slow, heavy riffs and ethereal female vocals.

Surely the catatonic female voices are what have endeared me to some of these tracks, and happily, I don't deny some similarities with Acid King, because this has never primarily sent me back to Busse Woods with a resounding and derriere-kicking: Soma worthily stirs music in this now well-known broth of jujube.
