It's truly incredible how sometimes completely random discoveries are made in the field of music, often with guilty delay as in my case when I recently discovered this all-Italian band precisely from the province of Udine, which after some lineup changes, released their beautiful new album.
The W.I.N.D. are an excellent trio active since 2000, boasting collaborations and performances practically worldwide with world-renowned artists in rock blues, names we enthusiasts unconditionally worship such as Warren Haynes and his Gov't Mule, Eric Sardinas, Johnny Neel former keyboardist of the Allman Brothers Band, Tishamingo, etc... but the list could almost go on endlessly, testament to their absolute musical credibility and talent.
The current lineup features Fabio Drusin on bass and vocals, Anthony Basso on guitar, brilliant and excellent even as a vocalist, and Silver Bassi on drums, and they love to define themselves as a Jam Bluesy Power Trio, a definition that couldn't be more fitting given the extraordinary variety of musical styles in which they love to maneuver, from intense rock'n roll songs, passionate stage rock blues and pure 70s style phrasings with funk contaminations.
This latest album is truly a small masterpiece and offers us over an hour of great music with an intertwining of truly interesting and always engaging themes and musical styles starting from the first track, "Amnesia", with a catchy riff and an immediately engaging rock blues cadence and an incessant rhythm enriched by a truly spot-on electric piano, continuing with "Deja Vu With The Blues", a fantastic track where the funky/blues rhythm is accompanied by jazz musician Mauro Ottolini's trombone, a testament to the band's eclecticism and creative imagination, then it returns to definitely more rocking atmospheres with the subsequent "My Solitude" and the beautiful "Wastin' my Time", then we find "Unbelieve" which begins with a decidedly funky feel to transform into a long, almost psychedelic journey reminiscent of certain magical 70s atmospheres with Drusin's pounding and almost hypnotic bass, but my favorites are "Demons" with its percussion base and the slide guitar taking the lead, "Funky to the Bone" and the long final suite composed of "Lucky Man" and a sort of hidden track with a wonderful version of "Almost Cut My Hair", one of the warhorses of CSNeY.
In essence, a beautiful CD, 10 tracks that are actually 11, to listen to multiple times to fully enjoy all its nuances, a long and intricate album rich in southern/blues atmospheres and references to 70s psychedelic rock, a band that truly deserves significant attention and the rightful recognition from us enthusiasts.
A note of merit for the production of this CD, with truly impeccable recording and sound, and for the beautiful internal booklet complete with photos and lyrics, a truly professional product meticulously curated down to the smallest details.
