When you hear the name Will Saul, a thought spontaneously arises: who is he?
In fact, before getting my hands on this album, I had never heard of him. My ignorance, to be clear. The trusty (or not so trusty) shop assistant had warned me: "Listen to it, you won't be disappointed".
He had also said the same for Daft Punk's "Human After All," which upon his suggestion, I had bought sight unseen... Even today, I blame him for the 18 euros wasted on that mishmash of robot-rock-ized samples. But that's another story...
Somewhat skeptical, I put on my headphones, hit play, and track by track, I convinced myself of the beauty of this work.
Music suspended between electro, dub, downtempo, hip hop, techno, and brokenbeat, in an intermediate dimension, the "Space between" indeed. Places where the icy voice of the Philadelphia poetess (Ursula "parsley everywhere" Rucker) also finds its place, first on the dub of "Tic Toc" and then on the breaks of "Where is it". Memorable "Soul in motion" and "Speak and spell" in a perfect alchemy of drum machines, bass bursts, vocoders, and female voices. Comparisons with Recloose's "Cardiology" come to mind, but also something else.
I look for information in the booklet.. ah, there it is! There's the collaboration of Fink from Ninja Tune. Everything makes sense. To conclude, "Space between" can be defined as a guided tour through little-frequented places of music.
