In 2007, is it possible to combine stoner and psychedelia? Of course it is, and this EP by Weird Owl, an American band from Brooklyn, proves it, flowing seamlessly in the player without any drop in style throughout the 5 tracks it comprises.
What unites each track on this CD is the slowness: slowness in the vocals, slowness in the rhythm, and a very measured pace that never increases. It starts with the title track, "Like 100000 Sunsets," where you can sense the framework of the album: a pace, as mentioned, slow, with low frequencies dominating, and heavily effected vocals; all creating an almost Pink Floyd-like psychedelia, combined with a dark atmosphere worthy of the best Kyuss and Red Temple Spirits. In the following 'Thy Space Grows Long' and 'The Hidden Fire', you can also hear the influence of early Mercury Rev, especially in the sound of the distorted guitars; particularly noteworthy in the latter is the change in rhythm that builds the track's intensity up to the end. In 'Tickle the invisible', notable is the long psychedelic tail, serving as a perfect embellishment to the track composed on a very catchy clean guitar theme, while closing perhaps with the best piece of the entire work, 'King Of The Flowers', tying with the opener: guitar and keyboards take the lead, the rhythmic base is very present, and closing with a very well-executed guitar solo with wah that blends perfectly with the track's atmosphere.
Highly recommended for those who love psychedelia, doom, and stoner.
