The Profile

Warrior Soul is an American hard rock band formed in New York City by vocalist Kory Clarke. Known for politically charged lyrics and a blend of hard rock, metal, punk and psychedelia, the band released a celebrated early-’90s run on Geffen before continuing with independent releases and a later-era resurgence.

Formed in New York City in 1989 by Kory Clarke; early lineup included John Ricco (guitar), Pete McClanahan (bass) and Mark Evans (drums). Signed to Geffen Records for the first four albums (1990–1993), including a Joy Division cover (“Interzone”) on the 1991 LP. The single “Wasteland” appeared during the Geffen period. Subsequently moved to other labels (e.g., Music For Nations) and resumed activity from 2007 onward.

DeBaser’s reviews frame Warrior Soul as a ferocious, politically driven hard-rock outfit fusing punk and psychedelia. The early ’90s run—especially Salutations From The Ghetto Nation and Last Decade Dead Century—is praised for impact and originality. Drugs, God and the New Republic earns plaudits for its intensity and Joy Division cover. Chill Pill is seen as a narcotic, trippy detour, while The Space Age Playboys divides opinions. Overall sentiment: reverent towards the first three-to-four albums, critical of later consistency.
