A summer day, a car ride towards the sea, with RAIstereoUno music in the background. A casual and sudden discovery.
"I perk up my ears": I divert my gaze from the beach and stare at the speakers, almost as if to hear better.
Filling the car with sounds is an American female group, ethereal voices but not too much, a blatantly '80s sound almost new wave yet devoid of that dated and somewhat retro label that on one hand provokes regret and on the other a desire to look forward.
Cocteau Twins more modern, Stereolab less experimental, music made in USA with a somewhat "British Invasion" sound, almost dirty but refined. I like it, I definitely like it.
I turn up the volume, trying to catch the name of the group through the speaker's mumbled slang, and then I immediately search for it on the web via cellphone. Sometimes I really love technology.
Thus I discover they are Warpaint, the track is from their first real CD titled "THE FOOL," label Rough Trade (aah, there) from 2010, following a debut EP from 2009, (perhaps not) easily traceable.
Reading various descriptions later, the most frequent comparisons are art rock, indie pop, dream pop and I'd say they all fit. I note it all down, and on the way back I already know that Warpaint will be mine. All of them.
For the more nostalgic yet always curious palates.
Here's a taste.
