Tracks No Longer Hidden (by Michele Massa)
"Extended to a Finite Time" is the title of the first studio album by the twenty-three-year-old Walter Piva, born in Gela but residing in Bologna. It is a self-produced work, in which the author personally crafted the lyrics and music and oversaw the arrangements. The main element of the album is the autobiographical aspect. Indeed, through words and music, a very precise journey is narrated, taking inspiration from the first part (of a total of three) of a work with the same name by the author. If the story is narrated by the text of the eight tracks on the album (plus a bonus track), the emotion intended to be conveyed is largely entrusted to the musical aspect, highlighted by a great variety of genres that differentiate the various songs from each other.
The stylistic unity is maintained by a predominantly pop base, resulting from Piva's artistic influences coming from the Italian tradition of light music. The variety is given by the hip-hop of "Nessuno è fuori", the ska/reggae of "Inarrivabile", or by "Sottovoce", a sweet ballad performed on the piano. A special mention goes to the first single "Lo straniero gioca in casa", with its catchy and compelling rhythm; the more introspective "Flussi d'incoscienza", which takes us from an initial tension filled with doubts and uncertainties to a dense finale where the desire to know oneself is emphasized by a gentle sonic flow. Finally, "Essere", perhaps the most direct and poetic track, where desires and utopias meet, baring the author's deepest thoughts. With the bonus track "Riassunto", just acoustic guitar and voice, the first chapter of this autobiographical journey concludes.
It is a tale that speaks of journeys, of heroes, of dreams, of reflections, aimed towards the awareness of one's own existence through the magic of continuous discovery. The discovery of an imagined, hidden world made of small traces, a steed, a siren. These are the signs through which the protagonist clings to give meaning to what he does, to what he sees. Traces to preserve to keep alive the illusion of that desired happiness. That same happiness finally reached through traces no longer hidden, but shared with a world that can now feel them, touch them, and thanks to them, be moved.
