"Ballroom Stories" is the third album by Klaus Waldeck, an Austrian producer who offers an elegant downtempo infused with dub, jazz, and especially swing.
By adapting the twenties into a modern guise, Waldeck utilizes a wide range of instruments (trombone and piano primarily) to achieve a sort of nu-swing that clings to gentle and sophisticated melodies ("Make My Day" great vocal-great video, "Addicted" exquisitely Parisian), and retro exercises reminiscent of black-and-white films ("Memories" timid dubbed melodies, "Jerry Weintraub" playful and jovial, "Dope Noir" airy ballad that takes on the spiritual tones of Psalm). "Midsummer Night Blues" with its triplet house rhythms and jazzy counterpoints recalls a Gloomy Sunday in a less depressing form, while the vocals of co-author Zeebee are always excellent and more than ever suited to the context.
Absolutely nothing pretentious, very pleasant album, very short and light-hearted, an ideal break between a heavy Jon Hassell piece and an electric shaman-form Davis. [3.5]
