It was the magical 1985 when the refined artistic adventure of Violet Eves began, a quintet from Rimini (consisting of Gabriele Tommasini: bass, Franco Caforio: vibraphone, percussion, drums, Leonardo Militi: piano and keyboards Renzo Serafini: guitars, clarinet, trumpet) characterized by the enchanting voice of Nicoletta Magalotti.
The Florentine record label IRA, a true diamond of the Italian independent rock scene, already the mother of multiple Italian bands destined to enter music history, such as Diaframma, Moda, and Litfiba (from which splendid collaborations were born, like the recording of the splendid 1989 single "Padam padam" - Violet Eves + Moda + Litfiba), released "Listen over the ocean," the first and only EP by Violet Eves.
The band's musical expression was a refined melodic blend, comprised of electronic jazz and an unconventional rock where the most intelligent pop married ambient, capable of surpassing any classical definition and immediately winning critical acclaim (although, as unfortunately was seen later, this impact with their music was welcomed almost exclusively by critics, garnering little public approval ... "the flaw, if it can be called that, of those who bear innovation!"). The two subsequent albums were received with great attention by the entire press: the historic monthly "Mucchio Selvaggio" bravely chose to feature the still-unknown Nicoletta Magalotti on its cover.
Interest in Violet Eves (atypical even in name, which literally means "violet vigils") began to grow in the international market: the mini-LP "Incidental glance" (a true Italian gem) from 1986 was also released in Japan, while their next and final official discographic product, the LP "Promenade," was released in France in 1988. Despite critical enthusiasm, the highly refined formula of their musical proposal wasn't able to capture the public, and by the end of the '80s, Violet Eves disbanded. Nicoletta Magalotti continued her singing career as a solo artist, managing to record an album titled "Nico" with "EMI Italy" in 1992.
Looking back today on the career of Violet Eves is the splendid collection "Overview" (2001), published by the historic independent record label Materiali Sonori, in a double CD. The first disc collects their 3 records where you can "savor" the incomparable voice of the singer N. Magalotti singing in English, Italian, and French (simply stunning!!!), while the second disc collects unreleased tracks, demos, and live versions. For the first time, we find as many as 34 tracks, in total, in digital support (of truly excellent quality) that trace the profile of a band that had no equal in our scene.
In short, to say that Nicoletta Magalotti and her band represented a turning point and an icon of the Italian underground scene of the '80s is an understatement!!! I truly recommend to everyone, absolutely everyone, the purchase of this sublime double CD by Violet Eves... the '80s will never be this close...!!!
"It's a great night, so great that I can't sleep from the silence there's, suspended moments without breath now waiting..... I close my eyes around a background that resembles the moon, moon stay where you are... magic, reality, I have entered the dream that's closed in a room of some city and walks brushing against my soul..."
