After winning the Hyundai Music Awards 2011 (the first online contest by an automotive company), the album ""Spazi"" was released on April 3, 2012, under the Universal Italia label.
The work is composed of 8 tracks, all taken from the previous album ""Distanze"" which the ""Violapolvere"" had self-produced.
Thus, tracks that were probably deemed not very "inspiring" were discarded, such as: "Cuore di cristallo" - "Non esiste" - "Le cose lasciate a metà" - "Quanta gente" - "Sono ancora qui".
Moving on to the album under review, from the very first notes there is a sense of "already heard". The drum beat of the first track, ""Rumore bianco"", too clearly resembles that of ""A Beautiful Day"" by the ""U2"".
A track with a predictable lyric, featuring the phrase "if walls could talk, you know how many mistakes they'd save us from making" as the epitome of banality.
The work continues with the song ""Non ha senso"" with which Violapolvere won the Hyundai Music Awards. The track proves prophetic: it makes no sense that this song managed to win a music contest. The 4/4 timing is banal, and the lyrics with "non ha senso se ci penso" are too.
The listener, already deeply put off by the first two tracks, struggles to find any reason, whatsoever, to continue after barely 10 minutes.
Nevertheless, the work continues with the tracks ""Come se volessi"" and ""Molecole"": the former turns out to be another banal track both in musical structure (with bass lines that sound all too familiar) and in the lyrics; the latter, however, in the general mediocrity, is at least a somewhat acceptable episode.
Moving forward, we encounter ""Rosso"", a cover of the well-known and wonderful song by ""Niccolò Fabi"". Here, the ""Violapolvere"" decide to rearrange the piece to suit the voice of the frontman, resulting in a song that makes you yearn for the original track and the voice of the Roman singer-songwriter.
Thus, we reach the seventh track ""Anima"", a song for which Violapolvere filmed a music video. This track further confirms the sensation felt with the album's opening track. The déjà vu is in all the instruments. The lyrics prove cryptic and incomprehensible even after a careful reading. The chorus is so annoying that it makes you want multiple times to mute the audio.
Finally, the album ends with the track ""Davanti ai tuoi occhi dipinti di nero"". The only piece that possibly escapes the general wreck. It's a pity for the frontman's voice, which, with his falsetto, fails to bring out the best in the track.
In short, an unpleasant album that is hard to listen to in its entirety, despite the few tracks and short duration.
Let's hope for better in their next musical effort, as this one, which reveals itself as quite disappointing as a ""Opera prima"" (to quote the ""Pooh"").
