"Vision Of Inferno," the first self-produced full-length by the Reggio-based Veneregrida, is in my opinion among the most interesting works realized in the underground scene here in Italy in recent years.
The band is composed of three musicians, some of whom come from different bands in the underground scene of southern Italy, namely: Vein (vocals and founder of the group), Morlock (bassist), and Mikydeath (lead guitar) while the drums are replaced by an excellent drum machine. This "V.O.I." is a direct and impactful album, mixing the fury of the most aggressive industrial with gothic elements and spectral music.
The real strength of this work lies in the excellent arrangements: indeed, right from the first notes of "The Beast Declares War To The World" (the album's opener), it does not seem like a low-cost production, but rather a professional work, meticulously crafted and excellently performed. The most interesting tracks are "Veneregrida," with its hardcore rhythm and atmospheric chorus reminiscent of the early albums by Strapping Young Lad; "Heretica," a glacial and apocalyptic piece thanks to a good use of strings that in the finale create a macabre atmosphere very much in Goblin style; "The Taker," in my opinion the best, very emotional and engaging; and the ingenious "Il male" with the ghost track.
Then all the songs maintain the same level, and the album never loses its tone. The only flaw is that it might sometimes be a bit derivative, meaning the influences are noticeable; however, they are well camouflaged because the band manages to give the album a particular and unique atmosphere, thus acquiring a distinctive and inimitable sound.
I hope my review has piqued your curiosity about this musical reality and somehow contributes to making these very deserving bands better known.
