Am I perhaps facing a sort of epic cyclops immersed in his dreams? I shift my gaze to the title to seek a key to understanding this image: Epic Mono. "Epic" immediately makes me think of poetry in antiquity, where myth and dream dominated the story. "Mono" I associate with the single eye drawn on the sleeping mask worn by VegetableG: a single eye that perhaps symbolizes the gateway to his dreams... there everything is subjected to an unusual, distorted vision, the vision of a single eye, but one capable of reading deeply, uncovering and bringing to the surface what we ignore or repress about ourselves: latent fears, repressed desires, yearned-for perversions...
Am I perhaps about to enter another dimension? ...the journey begins... The title of the debut track already refers to something not perfectly defined, perceptible but not codifiable: "Holograms". The first few seconds (which seem to recall the intro of Radiohead's Idioteque) are overwhelmed by a soft melody in the vocals and piano keys, but decisive in the guitar and even more in the regularly present drums throughout the track, up to that crescendo that is entirely instrumental, a stairs where the poetic disorientation begins to insert itself, the triumph of pure emotions, the detachment from what one is every day. Next comes "Green Forever", a piece characterized by a refrain that quickly imprints itself in the mind, everything travels on rhythms marked by a soft piano and a guitar that sometimes forcefully emerges. "Dreamkeeper" starts with a wealth of noises, disorienting effects where VegetableG's voice almost seems to want to instill unease. A considerable skill emerges, having nothing to envy to the great Thom Yorke, in using electronic creatures to create parallel worlds... and it's in one of these that I find myself now, a world made only of sensations, nothing tangible, nothing material... The sublime journey continues with the notes of "Rainy Rooms": a very sweet guitar for a stretch embittered by the drums, but soon sweetened by the beautiful melody of an electric piano... "Kiss me" repeats VegetableG..."Kiss me"... even in this surreal dimension, love is sought... Everything is pervaded by sounds, echoes, reverberations mixed with notes...
I'm suspended, the music is dense, never interrupted by fragments of silence. Momentarily "Traffic" seems to lead me back into human frenzy with that accelerated rhythm where almost exclusively electronic scores make their way. A metallic voice makes its fleeting entrance only to disappear immediately afterward... meanwhile, a thousand fragments of images overlap... I am still, but modernity flows before my eyes: neon lights, aggressive lights, strong colors. Effect? Total disorientation... perhaps a nightmare... "Procella": a Latin-like title to evoke a storm. A mellifluous storm of floating, muffled sounds that lulls me towards only imaginable, dreamlike realities, pure places where I exist without having consistency, where I look without having eyes... everything is a rarefied atmosphere... my steps do not touch the ground... This is perhaps the most evanescent track of the entire album, a track in which you forget you are human and which I consider the ultimate stylization of another 2 tracks present in "Epic Mono": "The Outsider" and "Capsule of Love", very delicate tracks that recall musical solutions akin to Sigur Rós. A guitar that is almost a lullaby opens and plays throughout "Capsule of Love". The state of suspension grows... "sleep and dream"... everything proceeds softly until the same guitar seems to become hard and distorted... the sounds are not very clear... in the background, there are always those electronic and terribly disorienting creatures...
Electronica and rock thus fused to finally generate something new. I take the package of this very carefully crafted work, look at the back: SLEEP... under those closed eyelids, everything floats, nothing happens...
