THE REVIEW

After the year of rest taken by Vasco, following the release of "Cosa Succede in Città" (1985); newspapers of the time had already speculated about the idea of Vasco potentially leaving the world of Music... but NO!! After he amazed everyone with the completeness of "C'è Chi Dice NO," the introspective and realistic "Liberi... liberi" is released!! Vasco has now reached the TOP of his maturation: aggressiveness and transgressiveness, in this album, give way to reserve and a certain resignation! At that time, everyone expected Vasco to deliver something that could disrupt the societal balance, but they were disappointed because it is precisely the title track "Liberi... liberi" that represents, as Vasco has repeatedly mentioned, the emblem of disillusionment!

Disillusionment preceded by the illusion mentioned in "Vita spericolata" (far from a hymn to Drugs!!!)... to accentuate this contrast during concerts, Vasco would perform them one after the other, also to try to introduce the two topics simultaneously: one moment shouting: "I want a reckless life" and the next moment furrowing his brow and admitting: "When we were young, it was a whole different thing... who knows why?... Maybe we were "stupid", but now we are "what"... "! Musically speaking, the title track presents itself as a ballad, outside the style of Blasco's previous ballads since these have always had as their central theme: Love!! In this album, the topic of "Love" is treated differently: romanticisms or love disappointments are almost entirely set aside to make room for the very poignant and, allow me the term, "pissed off" aspect of Dr. Rossi!! Among the anger of the song "Stasera," accompanied by a really significant solo and final high note, the provocation of "Domanica Lunatica" and the rhythm of "Tango... della Gelosia," Vasco tackles, as already mentioned, the "love" theme with that rock touch that only he knows how to give in Italy!

I initially mentioned that the "slow-love" pairing (I'm not trying to recall Celentano) Blasco has ALMOST set aside: I say ALMOST because the presence of the jewel "Dillo alla Luna" is the exception that proves the rule... the arrangement is beautiful, the lyrics fabulous, and the interpretation immense. In previous albums, I had never noticed a Vasco so immersed in the role of the "romantic"! But let's leave the "Love" theme to tackle the "Friendship" topic: in the album, there is the track "Vivere senza te" dedicated to the friend, and bodyguard, Roccia, who had decided to temporarily leave Vasco's band to pursue the love of a woman!! The pace of the song is very high, just as it is for the other 2 tracks such as "Ormai è tardi," a song whose title speaks volumes and initially highlights a sort of resignation on Vasco's part for what surrounds him, and "...Muoviti!!," a splendid rock song (perhaps the most Rock of the album) ideal for opening his concerts... this last track connects with Blasco's musical past, trying to shout to the young not to lose heart! The words are emblematic: "Move... "jump up" this is "a train" that doesn't pass... that doesn't pass again!"!! Final comment: complete and sincere album, which can only be fully appreciated after several listens!!

"Vascone has never been a Lord of Music: he invented nothing, he never renewed a thing..."

"'Liberi, liberi' of 1989 is a disarming misadventure in the darker grooves of lowly ambition."
