Wild At Heart - Cuore Selvaggio, the film with which Lynch, amid a thousand and one controversies, won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, is a work of art that certainly does not go unnoticed, as it is permeated with lucid and sparkling madness and genius, a very dark fairy tale, centered on an exaggerated and very violent hyperrealism.
Based on the novel by the brilliant Barry Gifford, known as the writer of chance and interrupted lives, the last true bard of an America populated by lost souls in perpetual balance between the sacred and the profane, this film represents for Lynch the opportunity to continue the dangerous and fascinating journey through the crazy and violent American province and the breaking down of all genres (here there's everything from comedy to western, from musical to soap opera) started with the chilling and morbid Blue Velvet.

Lynch thus constructs one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of cinema, telling the story of Sailor and Lula, a love story opposed by her mother Marietta, and many other demons like Marcello Santos, Perdita Durango, and the very evil and infernal Bobby Peru (played by a Willem Dafoe in a state of grace).
Lynch's ability to stage this strange and redundant road movie is superb, creating a subplot loosely inspired by The Wizard of Oz that blends perfectly and surprisingly with the demonic Giffordian characters, confusing as never before was done, good with evil, love with hate, truth with lies, dreams, nightmares with reality, sex with rape, madness with normality, life with death.
In the end, all the characters in this splendid film have a wild heart, just like the world they live in, the roads they travel with their hopes and their omens, no one is saved, all are swallowed and devoured by this great wild heart of life, despite the distorted and illusory ending where Sailor reunites with his Lula while singing a touching Love Me Tender, while the image warps to suggest that it is all a dream or if you prefer, a nightmare.

Cuore Selvaggio, magnificent and flaming road movie, more than a film it is a rock ballad, rebellious, irreverent, and sullen that tells a great love story and, to put it like Lynch, Cuore Selvaggio is the story of a love found in hell.
